UPFDA Spring Conference Brings Industry Leaders Together in Charleston

The 2026 UPFDA Spring Conference brought members together in historic Charleston, South Carolina, for two days of industry insight, meaningful conversations, relationship building, and memorable experiences centered around a shared commitment to the future of pest management.

In his opening remarks, UPFDA President Pat Lynch reminded attendees of the deep respect and passion that unite the association’s members and the pest control industry as a whole.

“The pest control industry has given all of us so much,” Lynch shared. “We must rise collectively to the challenge of leaving it in a better place for generations to come.”

That spirit of stewardship and leadership carried throughout the conference as manufacturers, distributors, and industry partners gathered to discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the industry.

The educational program featured a strong lineup of presenters and panelists who challenged attendees to think strategically about the changing marketplace. Keynote speaker Steve Good explored the evolving structure of the pest management industry, offering perspective on economic pressures, technology evolution, and opportunities ahead. He encouraged members to consider how the industry can continue to grow and evolve in the years ahead.

Heather Alonso, BCE, with Target Specialty Products, led an important discussion on the rapidly shifting regulatory landscape, helping attendees better understand the changing impact of federal and state regulations, reporting requirements, and licensing changes on manufacturers and distributors. The session reinforced the critical role UPFDA members play in advocating for their organizations, partners, and the industry overall.

Artificial intelligence was another major theme throughout the conference. Ed Gandia presented practical ways leaders can use AI to improve decision making and operational efficiency, while AJ Treleven of Sprague Pest Control shared insights on how stronger collaboration between suppliers and pest management professionals will be essential as AI and technology continue reshaping the industry.

Attendees also appreciated the candid distributor panel moderated by Marty Whitford of Pest Management Professional magazine. Panelists Brent Bunch of BWI and Andy Linares of Bug Off Pest Control shared real-world perspectives on consolidation, tariffs, inflation, labor challenges, and growth opportunities facing the industry today.

Beyond the educational sessions, the conference provided countless opportunities for members to strengthen existing relationships and build new ones. Conversations continued during breakfasts, breaks, lunches, and networking events, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that makes UPFDA unique.

One of the most meaningful activities of the conference was the volunteer opportunity with P.E.S.T. Relief International, UPFDA’s charitable partner. Members worked together in teams on-site to improve living conditions and provide critical resources to the Star Gospel Mission in Charleston. Star Gospel Mission, the oldest nonprofit organization in Charleston, has been serving the community since 1904, supporting men experiencing homelessness as well as families in need of essential services. UPFDA volunteers demonstrated the pest management industry’s ongoing commitment to public health and service.

The conference concluded with a sunset sail aboard the Schooner Pride, where attendees enjoyed dinner, drinks, and stunning Charleston harbor views while reflecting on the conversations and connections built throughout the event. The relaxed setting provided the perfect close to a conference focused not only on business growth and innovation, but also on community and collaboration.

As Lynch encouraged attendees during his welcome remarks, the future of the industry depends on the passion, creativity, and leadership of those willing to serve it.

“In other words,” he said, “ask not what this industry can do for you — ask what you can do for this industry.”
